THE SMART CHOICE 17 Although starter batteries are generally the primary focus for workshops that service and repair commercial vehicles (CV) vehicles, there are many other applications that they will regularly come across that also incorporate some sort of 12-volt battery, and it’s awareness of these that can allow them to benefit from useful profit opportunities. So, alongside its best practice battery replacement advice, which is to choose the highest quality option that’s most suitable for the application, Ecobat Battery, the UK’s largest battery distributor, is highlighting the OPTIMA brand as a great solution for when these opportunities come along. Not only does the OPTIMA range cater for the automotive, marine and leisure markets, plus the heavy duty (CVs, construction equipment and agricultural machinery) sector, they also incorporate unique technology that sets them apart for performance, lifespan and durability. These attributes are made possible in no small part by the use of the manufacturer’s unique SPIRALCELL TECHNOLOGY® to deliver batteries that possesses 15 times the vibration resistance compared to traditional batteries and an increased service life. In addition, they are virtually spill proof, as well as being maintenance free, to provide a solution that delivers complete peace of mind, particularly for applications where conditions are at their most demanding. For an industry where time is of the utmost importance, battery failure can be a disaster, but OPTIMA batteries offer three times the cycle life and require a shorter recharge time than conventional batteries, and by incorporating pure lead SPIRALCELL TECHNOLOGY into their design, they’re able to provide superior cranking ability and great cyclic capacity. OPTIMA SPIRALCELL TECHNOLOGY also takes absorbent glass mat (AGM) technology to a higher level, which results in OPTIMA’s pound for pound performance being unmatched. This is because at the heart of every OPTIMA battery is a series of individual spiral wound cells comprised of two pure (99.99%) lead plates coated in a precise coating of lead oxide. One coated plate is positive and the other is negative. Each lead plate is manufactured as a continuous cast strip that maintains critical thickness tolerances and the two plates get a proprietary separator made of a micro fibreglass blend that performs two critical functions: to keep the two plates from touching, and hold the electrolyte in a uniform suspension. The instantly recognisable, six-pack style 12-volt OPTIMA batteries, are made of six SPIRALCELLs, each having a fully charged open circuit voltage of 2.2 volts for deep cycle batteries and just over 2.1 volts for starting batteries. Product range The OPTIMA range comprises three primary products: YELLOWTOP®, REDTOP® and BLUETOP®, which all encompass the SPIRALCELL design, but naturally suit differing applications. The eight model YELLOWTOP range, which is designed for dual purpose applications, starts with the 38Ah R 2.7 and extends to the 75Ah S 5.5, providing operators with multiple options with up to three times the lifespan of traditional batteries and which are guaranteed to deliver uninterrupted power throughout the entire discharge cycle. With a higher voltage output than conventional batteries, the compact design minimises weight and makes it easier to mount them in tight spaces, and being highly resistant to extremes of temperature, they can be stored for long periods. There are nine models in the REDTOP range in capacities from 44- 50Ah, which all deliver immense power to the starter in the initial starting phase, so are ideal for applications where starting power is the priority. In addition to automotive, commercial vehicles, agricultural equipment and construction machinery are all sectors where REDTOP batteries provide an ideal solution, but their supreme performance is equally suitable for emergency vehicles and generators, as their extremely low self-discharge rate means they can be left untouched for extensive periods and still start the engine. In addition, they boast a fast recharge capability for rapid voltage recovery in short driving cycles. The BLUETOP range is a great solution for the marine sector and encompasses three AGM batteries from 55-75Ah all of which are dual purpose and can be used in any deep cycle (marine accessory, house applications, trolling motor, bow thrusters etc) or starting uses. In addition, the BLUETOP SLI (Starting, Lighting, Ignition) battery is purely a starting battery, although still with a lifespan of up to three times that of conventional SLI batteries.
